            Topic: Big Data in Precision Medicine and Population Health: Challenges and Opportunities

            Abstract:

            Advances in technology have enabled generation of big health data including, but not limited to, -omics data, electronic health records (EHRs) data, mobile health (mHealth) data, and imaging data. Such big, complex data offer remarkable promises for transforming precision medicine and population health and, at the same time, they present significant challenges in data analysis. In this talk, I will use multiple completed and ongoing research projects to illustrate innovative statistical and machine learning, data mining, and bioinformatics methods that my group has developed to harness the power of -omics data, mHealth data, and EHRs data for advancing precision medicine and population health.

            Biography:

            Dr. Qi Long is a tenured professor at the University of Pennsylvania, director of the Center for Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at the Abramson Cancer Institute, Elected Fellow of American Statistical Association and Elected Member of International Statistical Institute. In 1998, he obtained a bachelor's degree from the University of Science and Technology of China. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 2005. He has trained several Ph.D. and postdoctoral students at Yale University, Cornell University and other leading international universities.

            He is mainly involved in precision medicine, statistics related to precision health, bioinformatics, machine learning(AI), and research on data mining, including medical health big data analysis (omics data, electronic medical records (health records data), mobile health data), defect data, causal analysis, Bayesian methods and clinical trials etc. He has hosted a number of research projects supported by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. At the same time, he has participated in a number of large-scale medical research projects in cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurological diseases, and psychiatry as the chief statistics and bioinformatics expert.

            Currently, he is the Senior Editor of Cancer Research, a leading international journal on Cancer, and the Associate Editor of several leading international journals on statistics and medicine. He is a permanent judge at the national institutes of health (NIH) foundation. He has served as director of the north American east branch of the international society for biostatistics and co-chair of the 2014 annual meeting, and has held leadership positions at several international biostatistical associations and the American Statistical Society.
